Perinatal OCD: Diagnostic Clarity and Treatments

Scary intrusive thoughts and perinatal OCD are often missed or misunderstood by health professionals and parents alike. Differentiating scary intrusive thoughts and perinatal OCD requires diagnostic clarity and clinical skill; intervention requires attention to the symptoms while holding the perinatal context.

This interactive online training provides diagnostic clarity and treatment skills building for trained perinatal and infant mental health clinicians.

Adopting a neuroaffirming lens and using vignettes, in-depth case study and role plays, participants will develop a comprehensive framework for diagnostic differentiation and obsessional disruption that supports vulnerable people at a vulnerable time.

Perinatal OCD is positioned with the developmental and relational frames of the perinatal context and held via the Nested Model for Integrated Perinatal Intervention.  Infant mental health principals will be used to knit together the infant’s experience of a parent with perinatal OCD and illuminate ports of entry for relational repair.

Dr Bronwyn Leigh brings expertise in Perinatal and Infant Mental Health to her roles as the Founder and Director of the Perinatal Training Centre and the Centre for Perinatal Psychology. Bronwyn holds deep interest in the psychological aspects of becoming a parent, the emotional development of infants, and parent-infant relationships. Her work is primarily informed by psychodynamic and attachment frames, in which a trauma lens is embedded, permeated by a focus on strengthening parental mentalization.

As a champion for change, Bronwyn holds special interest in the neuroaffirming care of parents and infants and recognises the importance of skilled intervention to support Autistic and ADHD people for which Perinatal OCD is over-represented.

Sarah Edwards is a dual endorsed clinical and educational and developmental psychologist who works in her solo private practice, Keeping Mum Psychology, providing therapy and supervision. A keen teacher, Sarah has continued to work for her alma mater, QUT, since finishing her own studies in a variety of teaching and supervisory roles.

In her clinical work, Sarah regularly draws on the rich learnings of wonderful mentors in the areas of developmental psychology, systems work, attachment-informed interventions and infant mental health. Alongside an interest in perinatal Autistic and ADHD care, Sarah has developed an interest in another arm of the neurodivergent umbrella, OCD. In this fascinating and complex intersection, Sarah is excited to share how accurate differentiation, targeted treatment and affirming care can be life saving and life-giving.
