Jata Elliott

Jata (they/she)
Midwife | Researcher | Advocate | Activist AuDHDer and Proud

Jata is a midwife, academic, and PhD researcher whose work centres reproductive justice and neurodiversity-affirming care. With over 20 years of experience across the UK, Canada, and Australia, they bring a grounded and globally informed perspective to their practice. Jata is an Endorsed Midwife with a deep commitment to informed choice and supporting people to birth in the way that feels right for them- whether that’s within or beyond conventional guidelines.

Currently undertaking a PhD on Neurodivergent perinatal experiences, at ECU, Jata’s research is shaped by their lived experiences as an AuDHDer themselves. Their work is neurodiversity informed, participant-led and grounded in the belief that every birthing person deserves to feel safe, understood, and supported. They advocate for inclusive, trauma-informed care that respects neurodivergent communication, sensory needs, and decision-making processes, especially during labour and birth.

Jata is the founder of Midwives for Neurodiversity, an advocacy and education platform dedicated to transforming perinatal care through the lens of neurodivergence, disability justice and equity.

As a proud Romani and settler living on Whadjuk Noongar Country, Jata is committed to decolonising perinatal care and amplifying voices that have long been excluded. Jata’s work invites birth workers and mental health professionals to reimagine care systems that honour difference, promote autonomy, and centre those most often left at the margins: because birth should be safe, empowering, and affirming for every body and brain.
